Tom Ford — FASHION DESIGNER TOM FORD — made this film as his directorial debut and it is more visually perfect than most directors achieve in a lifetime. The poster says everything: Colin Firth in those thick black frames and an impeccably cut dark suit, his face held in barely-contained grief, Julianne Moore golden and blurred behind him like a dream he can't hold onto. This film is about a gay man in 1960s Los Angeles who has lost his partner and is deciding whether to keep living. Every single scene is composed like a fashion photograph. The beauty is the point — beauty as armor, as grief, as the last act of dignity.
