The visual search sent me here looking for seagulls over a harbor and delivered beyond all expectation. The screenshot: a whole flock of gulls mid-flight against a flat grey winter sky, the fishing dock behind them swallowed in fog, boats just barely visible through the haze, bare trees on the hillside. Everything desaturated to the colour of wet rope. Every gull is in a different attitude — banking, diving, hovering — like they're the only living things in that frozen harbor. I've wintered in ports exactly like this. The cold comes off the screen. It's the most honest seagull shot I've ever seen in a film — they're not decorative, they're witnesses. The whole miserable, beautiful, salt-aired grief of the New England coast is in one frame.
