A council estate in southeast London, a long hot summer, two teenage boys discovering they're in love. I challenge anyone to watch Beautiful Thing and not have their heart completely dissolve. It's gentle and messy and TRUE in the way only British kitchen-sink realism can be. The Mama Cass soundtrack. The neighbours being unexpectedly tender. The scene where they finally dance together — I will never stop thinking about it. This film was radical when it came out in 1996 and it's still radical because it refuses to make their love a tragedy. They get JOY. Queer kids deserve joy.
