People always imagine a lightship as a romantic thing — a floating lighthouse, lantern on the water. What this film understands is that a lightship is also a trap. You are anchored. The sea moves around you and you cannot move with it. The crew are not sailors in the usual sense; they are keepers, like me, stuck to a fixed point while the whole ocean heaves past. When the criminals come aboard, the real horror is not violence — it is the violation of the one place you had made your own out there. I recognised that.
