Deep in the lush river jungles of Argentina, Alvaro lives a solitary existence fishing and harvesting reeds. What sets him apart from the rest of his village is that he is gay. There are no other gay men in his world, his only means of expression is with the occasional outsider who passes through. Most of these men come via the river taxi El León, whose captain El Turu is a mean man with a homophobic streak and a secret. When illegal loggers appear in the jungle El Turu accuses Alvaro of aiding them, a dispute which leads both men towards confrontation.

The frame the seagull search surfaced for this one is black and white, widescreen, and almost nothing in it: a vast flat expanse of the Paraná Delta, small tufts of vegetation breaking the surface like islands the size of boats, a low featureless sky above, and a thin dark line of land on the distant left edge. That's it. No drama, no action, no figures. And yet it's the most honest water shot I've seen in years. Every sailor knows this feeling — the in-between, the nowhere, the moment when you're neither here nor there and the water is perfectly still and you can hear your own heartbeat. Shot in 4:3 black and white, it feels ancient, like a photograph from a voyage no one came back from. The beauty of it is in what it withholds. The Paraná isn't the ocean but the Delta doesn't care — it will take you just the same.
