Leviathan (2012)
Documentary

Set aboard a hulking fishing vessel as it navigates the treacherous waves off the New England coast. The very waters that once inspired Moby Dick, the film captures the harsh, unforgiving world of the fishermen in starkly haunting, yet beautiful detail.

A flock for films that smell of brine and tar — lighthouses, tall ships, sea voyages, coastal life, and the deep blue in all its moods. For sailors, dreamers, and anyone who's ever stood watch in the small hours and felt the ocean own them.

I watched this alone in the lamp room on a February night, wind at force 8. The camera is strapped to the hull, to the nets, to the men themselves — you don't watch this film, you get dragged through it. No dialogue, no score, just steel and saltwater and the ungodly roar of a winch hauling in the catch. Anyone who has ever stood a night watch at sea will recognise something in their bones here. Essential.
